Activity 4.5
1.- This cartoon prove that language can be used to manipulate people by using a tone of critic against whoever says is preferable to have a good helth rather than smoking, like for example it could be used like: "Why have a good health when you can enjoy some cigarettes", where it's shown that the intention is to sell the cigarettes and make profit over the welfare of the people. It also remarks with the phrase "(...) but it might work." that most of the people believes this and so they make them get more profit and stay a longer time causing illness and death to people.

Activity p.165
1.- The tone in the rhymes is softer and more intended for children while the image has a more strong tone more intended for teens o adults.
2.- The limitation is that there are some implicit things that can only be told with images, in some cases more than is intended with a full chapter.
3.- The limitations of the image as storytelling is that the image alone could show a context different from the one intended in the text.
4.- Not necesarily, it depends in other facts such like, for example, if a fragment is told in it's correct context or in a different context (the fragment can chage its meaning if its told alone without it's previous and post sentences) or if it is translted to a different language where some words could change meaning.
Activity p.167
-Television news report: the use of sarcasm, for example, could cause a complete confusion because the news are a non fiction text so the use of sarcasm will make people not understand if it's a source of trust.
-Television opinion piece: the use of nonstandard pronunciation or the use of jargon starts to low the level of arguing to defend an opinion.
-Newspaper editorial: the use of this features could case the same effect than the T.V. opinion piece, but the people could also think that the newspaper could not be worth reading it.
-Political columnist's blog: the use of such features will be devastating in this case because the politicians and journalist alone have a fragile reputation and the use of this features could make that reputation to break, completely break and make that person, not only as a politician or journalist also an everyday person, little credible and unreliable.
-Celebrity profile in a magazine: these features in this case could make the general public think that celebrity uses this features, in consquence, making the reputation and fame of this person decay so abruptly it could turn in a chaos (it could be general or individually to that person).
-Sports broadcast: the use of some of this features could be negative and some other could be positive in this case because it could attract more attention to the sport, but also could make people think that the sport is not really worth to watch (or listen in the case of radio) and focus on something else.
-Political speech: as I said before, the use of this elements in this case could be devastating because of the unreliability to the politician that will lead (using this features) the politician to be completely unreliable not only as a politician, also as an everyday person.
-Advertisement: this case is probably the most likely to see, and could lead (maybe in a long term) to the bankruptcy of the company, or simply to a massive decay in sales.

Test Practice
"Whoever controls the media control the opinions". It is true because whoever contols this can choose to what publish and what not to publish and this can make a person, if it is persuasive enough, to change the thoughts of people to the one of the newspaper in a subliminal way, or in other words it goes unnoticed by the people, till the point where people will actually not think fo themselves but will think what the newspaper think and tell them to think. "There is litle that can be done to rectify this". this statement is also true because one can't tell the newspaper what not to publish because of the free expresion right, that also forbidden the government to tell them what to not publish so they start to publish such thing in an unstopable way that makes most of the world think what the newspaper says and the few that are near and related to the facts mentioned (revolutions, disturbs, etc.) think different, but being the minory

1.-The course this year is, apart from the continue of the IB program, where the IB students we'll learn to analyze poetry (which is a challenge in spanish and more challenging in english) and also we'll learn about mass communication and it's features (we already start learning that) and other language elements during the first and second periods, and literature elements as poetry analysis (as said before) and the book "Jane Eyre" during the third and fourth periods. The assessment this year (with some missing dates) is as it's seen in this link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhrcfNzEXZx6dG81bEZHb2dHTEFNQmVISm53eFBVZ2c#gid=0
or through this one: http://year11languageandliterature.wordpress.com/category/assessment/ in case the one above doesn't work well. My expectation this year is basically (as in most classes) improve my grades and improve myself from last year.
2.-
a) The "Lowe Bull" ad agency
b) It is. The image itself is attractive because the persons would notice the big image with the little AXE ad being indistinguishable at certain distances so the people would get near to see what it is and try to understand it.
c) The videogames adiction
d) The gamer point of view
e) Make people think that without AXE they would be like the guy in the image so they would buy it to avoid being ike him.
3.-
a) Mcdonald's
b) It is. The hamburger itself is attractive because the people will notice a giant hamburger ad and when getting near will notice the weight of it and go and buy it to taste it.
c) The hunger value (?)
d) The hamburger maker point of view
e) To attract people to eat that hamburger saying that it is tastier and better than other ones so the people will buy it more.

Written Task
"Budapest, 1940"
It was a Monday, we were at home having lunch with uncle Lajos when we heard the news, Hungary had finally joined the Axis and the Wehrmacht and the SS were already searching and marking the jews. We knew it was just a matter of time until they'll find us. Uncle Lajos told us some days ago: "With the germans advancing so rapidly they will sooner or later arrive to Hungary, let's hope it will be later". Later that day uncle lajos had to leave to return his home, after that a letter arrived saying that the whole family had to go and register as jewish in the center of the main park, father was silent for a while and then he told us: "This means that is very likely that I'll have to go to a camp, I'm gonna pray to God for this not happening", and he left for praying. Mother meanwhile was worried, she couldn't think what to do if father was taken, she reached a point of worry when she started to cry. I was calming her down when suddenly father came back from praying and said: "Grab your coat and your hat, we have to go register ourselves". It was a long trip to the registration, along the road were a lot of people heading to the park, but the number tripled when we arrived. When it was our turn I saw to my sorroundings, I watched as the soldiers took away many old men and women, and the suffering of their families. When we finished we were marked with a yellow star to distinguish us from the rest of the people.
The next day when I arrived at school most of the kids were staring at me, some with face of disgust, others with face of hate, the teacher inclusive hadn't the the same attitude as always. When we were at lunch time, the few jewish boys as me were sitted on a table in the farthest end of the dining hall, and our food was stealed without us to do anything or we could get expulsed from the school. This started to make me fell deppressed and mother and father started to worry about this. They took me to the doctor, after he took a look at me he concluded that my problem was caused because of the treatment I recieved at school, so mother and father transfered me to a jewish school where there basically can't discriminate me.
After a time of one week we recieved a letter to the house for father. When he read it he collapsed and looked at mother, and mother started to cry disconsolately. I tried to calm her down but she pushed me away everytime I wen to hug father. At some point I went to hug him too knowing the truth, he was going to auschwitz. The next morning we all went to sinagoge to thank God that we as a jewish family had the home and the food and all the requirements a human needs; and also ask God for strenght for this difficult and sad moment for all of us as we knew that was very likely that father wasn't going to comeback.
The next day was very busy because father was deciding who will take care of what while he is not here.
Rationale:
I've chosen to write a new opening on the book "Fatelessness" . I did it trying to show, or at least make an idea, of the life of Georg before the events descripted in the book and how he reached the moments in the first chapter. I found it very interesting because you can know about george and his family before his father had to leave to the labor camp.
The audience of this type of writing could be, as I said before, someone who will read or is already reading the book and want to know the "preview" of the book. For this I tried to use almost the same use of language as the book so it could sound like it was written by Georg Koves, and try to "mix" and "camouflage" with the novel.
Something I added was that Georg's father and mother were still together when the events of the new opening happened, something that most of people will notice and can think that this is another story sinilar to Fatelessnes, but with the difference that I never said how much time difference is between the book and my text. Georg's mother and father were still in very much love between them whe this happened, as it can be seen principally in the first page, and the fact of people being taken away by the soldiers was more violently than it actually was.
This title isn't very elaborated, but it has the characteristic feature of telling the reader when this story (The new opening one) started. So the title "Budapest, 1940" can tell that, at least the first paragraph, happened in Budapest in the year 1940.
